The People Driving Innovation ... Aaron Mc Daid
1. What inspired you to pursue a career in your field?
My route into engineering was not necessarily a traditional one, but that has shaped the way I think and work today. I began in the construction industry and developed a strong interest in 3D-CAD, design, and the technical side of how buildings are brought to life. That interest eventually led me into Fire Safety Engineering.
What inspired me most was the opportunity to combine technical problem-solving with real human impact. Fire and Life Safety Engineering is about protecting people, supporting safe design, and enabling architects and developers to push boundaries responsibly. As buildings become taller, more complex, and more ambitious, fire engineering plays an essential role in making those visions achievable and safe.
2. How does working in the UAE influence your professional growth and your approach to your work?
Working in the UAE has had a major influence on my professional growth. The scale and ambition of projects here are exceptional. In this region, buildings and developments are often among the most complex in the world, and that demands a very high level of technical knowledge, leadership, and adaptability.
The UAE encourages professionals to think beyond standard solutions. Every project requires innovation, collaboration, and a clear understanding of international best practice. That environment has pushed me to continuously improve, to lead with confidence, and to approach each challenge objectively and creatively.
3. How do you feel your work contributes to shaping the UAE’s future?
Fire and Life Safety Engineering is a critical part of shaping the UAE’s future because it supports the creation of safe, resilient, and world-class buildings. My work helps ensure that ambitious developments can be delivered without compromising on the safety of the people who will live, work, and gather in them.
Whether it is a super high-rise tower, a major public building, or a large-scale development, the role of fire engineering is to help create spaces that are both innovative and safe. In that sense, I feel my work contributes directly to the UAE’s vision for sustainable growth, advanced infrastructure, and global leadership in engineering and development.
4. In your opinion, what makes the UAE a unique place for engineering and development?
The UAE is unique because of its ambition, pace, and willingness to push the limits of what is possible. It is a place where bold ideas move quickly from concept to reality, and where engineers are challenged to deliver solutions for projects of extraordinary scale and complexity.
What also makes the UAE special is the diversity of expertise here. Professionals from all over the world come together to work on landmark projects, bringing different perspectives, experiences, and technical knowledge. That creates a very dynamic environment for engineering and development, where innovation is not just encouraged — it is expected.
5. What message would you share with the next generation of engineers and professionals building the UAE of tomorrow?
My message would be to work hard, stay curious, and always be willing to go the extra mile. Engineering is not only about having technical knowledge; it is also about learning how to think, how to solve problems objectively, and how to keep improving throughout your career.
The UAE of tomorrow will be built by people who are proactive, committed, and prepared to take on complex challenges. Distinguish yourself through your attitude, your work ethic, and your willingness to keep learning. Most importantly, remember that the work you do has a real impact on safety, on communities, and on the future of the country.
