The people driving innovation ... Robert (Bob) Rea

1. What inspired you to pursue a career in your field?

It was quite by chance that I followed a career in Firefighting and the post service second career.  I was initially planning on becoming a Marine Biologist but did not get the exams to go to University.  I explored several options the Navy, Police and then some friends from the Rugby Club after a game said, ‘You don’t want to join them, come and join us we have great fun’.  So, I contacted the Careers Office, went for a meeting and they called Royal Berkshire Fire Service, who said write in, but at this time they were not recruiting.  I wrote in giving my history and they came back saying could I go for tests the following week.  I went for the tests, expecting it to be just me, to find a room full of other applicants.  I did the tests, interviews and was told I could start in June 1982 if I cancelled my holiday.

My career was mainly in RBFRS, but I spent nearly 8 years at the Fire Service College, where initially I went to teach Incident Command, but after 911 I moved to Urban Search and Rescue, which was a defining part of my career. I led the training delivery for the UK USAR teams, building the facilities, delivery team, programme and content, being awarded the Queen’s Fire Service Medal for my services.

I retired in 2012 after over 30 years of service, having served in all the fire service disciplines, Operations, Fire Safety, Training and Support. However, retirement did not suit me. I was driven to continue contributing to share my knowledge, mentor the next generation, and extend my experience beyond the frontline.

I was served well by working in the Fire Service, so I see this phase of my careers as very much about ‘Giving Back’, the Knowledge, Skills and Understanding I gained during my career allows me to use this to better individuals and organisations.

I have always been committed to working hard and providing the highest quality and inspiring others to achieve too.

Having been an operational leader in the fire and rescue service I bring the essential calm for Command Presence to the Office, which helps lead and manage the team.

Working in the UAE allows me to be in a region that I enjoy and feel that my input can make a difference.

I am studying a Level 7 Executive Coaching Diploma, so I see that my professional growth will aid others on their professional journeys.

3. How do you feel your work contributes to shaping the UAE’s future?
