Design Confidence was instrumental in ensuring that Al Wasl Plaza met the highest standards of safety, comfort, and accessibility, enhancing the overall visitor experience during Expo 2020 and ensuring the plaza that the plaza adhered to universal design standards.
Al Wasl Plaza, situated at the heart of Expo 2020 Dubai, is a central gathering point that serves as a cultural hub for exchange, entertainment, and interactive experiences. Known for its stunning architecture, particularly its iconic dome, the plaza played a pivotal role in the Expo’s goal to create a global meeting space that merges innovation, technology, and sustainability.
Design Confidence conducted extensive fire safety modelling to guarantee the efficient evacuation of visitors in the event of an emergency. The design of the plaza incorporated critical safety elements such as fire exits, fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and smoke control systems, all of which were assessed to create a secure environment. Emergency access and egress planning were also key, with detailed analysis of evacuation routes ensuring that first responders could quickly access all areas and visitors could exit safely during an emergency. Additionally, evacuation modelling was used to simulate pedestrian flow and crowd management, ensuring the plaza could handle large numbers of people while adhering to safety protocols.
Design Confidence also played a vital role in enhancing the comfort of visitors in such a challenging climate. Dubai's high temperatures posed a unique challenge, but the company used thermal comfort modelling to assess how factors such as temperature, humidity, and wind would affect visitors' experience. This modelling led to recommendations for providing shading and managing heat within the plaza, ensuring that visitors could enjoy the space even during peak sunlight hours. Furthermore, pedestrian comfort analysis was carried out to optimize the layout of walkways, seating areas, and shaded zones, accommodating the large crowds expected.
When it came to accessibility, Design Confidence ensured that the plaza included the creation of wide pathways, ramps, accessible seating, and clear signage to accommodate individuals with mobility challenges. Wayfinding and signage were also carefully considered to guide visitors easily through the plaza, making it user-friendly for people of all abilities and ensuring that everyone could access key attractions and facilities with ease.
Through their engineering and advisory expertise, Design Confidence helped to make Al Wasl Plaza not only a visually stunning and iconic space but also one that prioritized the safety, comfort, and accessibility of all its visitors. Their contributions played a key role in creating a welcoming environment for the diverse crowds attending Expo 2020.
